Marynissen Estate Winery
Marynissen Winery is the home of Canada’s oldest Cabernet Sauvignon vines. These vines grow in the estate’s vineyard. The estate winery opened in 1990 and has past along two generations of winemaking expertise in Niagara’s Winescape. All the award-wining wines are available for purchase in the retail store of the winery. The winery is open year round and offers guests the chance to experience the winery, with the full tour (available by appointment only). The Marynissen Estate Winery has been family owned and operated since 1990, and the land has been used to grow grapes since the 1950’s.
Overview
Vineyard
John Marynissen began growing grapes in 1952, when he came to Canada from Holland. In the 1970’s he switched to planting vinifera vines and was the first person to plant Cabernet Sauvignon. To this day some of the vines still exist on the property of Marynissen Estates Wines.
John Marynissen has been the recipient of many prestigious awars, incluing Grape King in 1978, 1989 Best Estate Bottled Wine Award at the American Wine Society Competition for the 1987 Riesling, Grand Champion in St. Catharines, 1990 Best of Show Award for the 1989 Chardonnay and the Konstantin Frank Award for Best Vinifera Wine at the American Wine Society Competition.
