It is certainly fitting that the announcement of a launch date for Maid of the Mist’s new electric boats came on Earth Day 2021.
The iconic attraction, which has shuttled guests to the base of Niagara Falls since 1846 has launched their season with the two new boats. Maid of the Mist docks are only accessible in Niagara Falls New York, but the vessel’s journey is best viewed from Niagara Falls Ontario.
The new boats, named “James V. Glynn” and “Nikola Tesla” are the first two new all-electric, zero-emission passenger vessels in the United States. Maid of the Mist states the new boats provide a smoother, greener, and quieter ride in the waters of the Niagara River. Without the rumble of engine noise, guests will be able to fully embrace the roar of the Falls, while enjoying spectacular close up views of Niagara Falls.
Maid of the Mist collaborated with New York State Parks, New York Power Authority and ABB; a pioneering technology leader to create clean, renewable hydropower to operate the vessels. Each boat has been outfitted with high-capacity battery packs, integrated power and propulsion systems and the docks have been fitted with onshore charging systems for maximum reliability.
Maid of the Mist is one of two boat tour companies that make the journey to the Falls. Maid of the Mist operates in Niagara Falls New York, and Niagara City Tours (formerly Hornblower Niagara Cruises) departs from the Canadian side. Canadian guests will have to wait a bit longer for a tour to the Falls, with boats expected to take to the water once Ontario’s Stay at Home Emergency Order is lifted.
